From:
wildbill@kpig.com (William Goldsmith) To: kurt@kurthanson.com Hi
Kurt: You might ask if they've had any specific problems with Windows
Media server logs. We're hearing from our streaming service provider
that the logs that the WMT server keeps are grossly inaccurate (reflecting
only about 50% of the actual listening). thanks bg
Kurt, (1) You might ask why the numbers are deliberately presented
in a way which makes comparisons with radio data difficult. Why
not provide 6am-12m weekly cumes? Why not provide AQH? Why not present
the data in the same format as radio data? So what if the numbers
are small for now...they are what they are. Should Arbitron be a
measurement service or a cheerleader? (2) BTW, how does Arbitron
know each user is a distinctly different person? By IP address (changes
dynamically for dial up users)? Or does the measurement system drop
a cookie on the user's hard drive for tracking purposes? Privacy
concerns? (3) Is there any way to determine the broad geographical
location of a user or even whether he or she is in North America?
(4) With the prevalence of cookie-erasing software (Luckman's Anonymous
Cookie or Websweep for example) the actual web cumes may be much
smaller than the estimates indicate. Kurt, put on your best Mike
Wallace game face and don't let them snow you with glittering generalities
or baffling bullshit. Have fun in the belly of the beast. Best,

kurt, i would love to know more about their difficulties with netradio
and similar companies; namely, why can't the parties agree as to
how audiences should be measured. I have corresponded with joan
fitzgerald a few times regarding netradio, but have never really
received a satisfying answer (from arbitron or netradio). thanks,
h

(John Meyer) To: kurt@kurthanson.com In terms of the Arbitron folks,
I'd be interested in a complete list of the 290 stations that were
included as well as their formats...it would be interseting to see
who wasn't on the list (i.e Broadcast.com Stations) Thanks John

You know what we'd like to see...what the client gets...and just
how they slap this stuff togethor. Do they packet sniff inbound
or just use a server log (which for real data mining isn't worth
all that much) How do they handle cache servers? AOL the biggest
game in town in the ISP space..most of the time cache's pages...the
newer stuff they have can cache audio/video...sort of.. How do they
define what is a session? What's the time out..30 minutes (which
seems to the the defacto)...session is a unique connection...you
hitting a web site...it sees your ip..(isp)..
In November, "22 of the 255 channels included are Internet-only
audio including newcomer Electric Eye Radio, being streamed by Access
21." Anyone have a breakout of all these? (LJ) "The server
side measurement continues to bother me..If you leave your player
running..even if you're not at your desk on a T1 or high speed always
on connection (dsl, cable)...you're still counted as tuned in. (LJ)
Kurt, Love RAIN, I'm glad I'm on the list! If you can, ask the Arbitron
Gods if they have any plans to measure audience on the web with
those of us who do not stream through broadcast.com, etc. Our web
site is pretty good, I think, and would love you to take a gander
at it when you have a moment and share your thoughts on how we can
improve it, make it more user friendly, etc. The site is www.wjbr.com.
Thanks, Michael Waite VP/Operations 99.5 WJBR-FM
"How is Arbitron crediting on-line listening? If I listen on
my computer to a station stream, do they get credit? If I listen
to something other than their broadcast signal on the station web
site, does the station get Arbitron credit? Can listening on-line
effect a station's QH in Arbitron? Go get em Kurt, ask the tough
questions! John Bradley SBR Creative Media

Questions would be: 1) why don't they also rate Spinner, Imagine
Radio, Rolling Stone Radio, etc? 2) Why not typical data, AQH etc.
It's easier to do (than traditional radio) with the tech aspects
of the Internet, etc.
Kurt, Here are some questions for your trip to Arbitron. Thanks
for RAIN, I really enjoy reading every day, keep up the great work!
(1) What is Arbitron going to charge for their infostream service?
(2) When are they going to add demographics? What will broadcasters
need to do to participate in this service? (3) How will they compete
with Nielsen NetRating's new streaming reporting service? (4) Do
they believe log file analysis is the best way to collect listener
data? If not, what will they do in the future? (5) How are they
going to address your issues with regards to accuracy of infostream
reports? (6) Do they have a strong partnership with RealNetworks
or Microsoft? If so, what can we look forward to from these partnerships?
(7) Why did it take them almost three months to release December
numbers? Why are the numbers taking longer and longer to be released?
(8) Why isn't Broadcast.com supporting InfoStream? (9) When are
they going to enhance InfoStream and what features will they be
adding to it? Thanks, and have a great trip!

Yes I do have a question for you to ask the Arbitron guys... Bozeman,
mt is not measured even once a year... It's too small, but so what?
You know Ted Turner has a $98,000,000 ranch here and it's the fastest
growing county in the state. Couldn't we just have a spring book?
Please? Thanks.. BB
