Headline: "NAB makes issue of keeping royalty pressure on SX, Congress"
BY DANIEL MCSWAIN
The National Association of Broadcasters is keeping a keen eye on royalty issues across broadcast media, putting pressure on SoundExchange as well as Congress with two new campaigns.

Last week, the NAB placed a graphic tally (seen below) of the days elapsed without a response from SoundExchange to the group's "good-faith" offer regarding webcast royalty rates. The NAB's offer was made June 6 in a meeting between executives from both groups.

In a press release last week, NAB Executive VP Dennis Wharton said, "The sounds of silence from SoundExchange are deafening," adding that "SoundExchange's callous refusal to respond to our reasonable offer threatens not only the recording artists they purport to represent, but also a fledgling technology that benefits listeners."

The NAB is also continuing to put pressure on Congress to act against the imposition of a proposed performance royalty for broadcast radio. The group has created a "mock invoice," estimating that such a royalty would cost stations between 10-35 % of gross revenue, paid to the labels for "the privelege of promoting the record labels' music free of charge, and lining recording industry executives' pockets with music and concert sales."

A copy of that "mock invoice" is available here (.pdf).

There's huge, and growing, demand among consumers for Internet radio (at least during the 9AM-5PM workday), as shown by the rapid growth of our AccuRadio project.

AccuRadio features a variety of popular music formats that you simply can't find on the broadcast dial: Swingin' Pop Standards, Brit Rock, Piano Jazz, Broadway and more at www.AccuRadio.com.

From DigitalMediaWire: "
Batanga, an online media company targeting the Hispanic community, announced on Monday that it has raised $30 million in its third round of venture capital financing...

"Miami-based Batanga.com claims
4.5 million monthly unique users, and 100,000 myBatanga members as of August.

"The site streams over
90 million songs and 10 million videos per month, and hosts more than 5,000 user-generated radio stations.

"The company will use the funds to expand its
marketing efforts, and further develop its social media products and online content."

From PCMag.com: "XM's newest radio, the XpressRC, debuted on Monday, sporting a buffer to save songs, as well as a split screen.

"Generally the introduction of new satellite radio receivers hardly merit even a blog post, but the XpressRC boats a few cool features worth mentioning.

"First off is a buffer that lets the user save 60 minutes of programming, for song repeats and instant replay for sports. Another feature lets you save your ten favorite songs...

"The XpressRC's real killer feature, however, is its display. The full-color screen is customizable, letting the user dictate what they see, including the channel, artist, and song name, while a split screen feature displays the current song on one side, while letting the user browse the content of up to three channels on the other. You can also check out up to five of your favorite tracks on that side, as well...

"The XpressRC is rolling out this fall with a $170 price tag."
