Save Net Radio

Internet radio may be driven out of business within weeks by a Copyright Royalty Board decision that gives record companies a royalty rate that exceeds 100% of most webcasters' total revenues.

Visit SaveNetRadio.org for links to a petition to Congress you can sign, and to send the message directly to your Representative and Senators that you don't want to lose Internet radio!

PETITION UPDATE: Please keep Internet radio alive!
was at over 50,026 signatures as of 1PM CT today (up from 43,000 last Friday). Today's sample signature:
# Name Thanks to Internet radio, have your CD (or music download) purchases (01) gone up, (02) stayed the same, or (03) gone down? Do you feel that the existence of Internet radio helps or hurts the music industry? Other comments
50010 Darla Grediagin 01 I feel that the Internet Radio helps the music industry. When I hear a song that I like, I will often purchase the song, so that I have it available when I want it. In rural Alaska, I feel that Internet radio is my link to the outside world. I don't have a local radio station that I want to listen to.
Internet radio listeners are currently signing this petition to Congress at the rate of several hundred listeners every hour -- with most of them adding insightful comments about their music purchase behavior!  (Read more comments here.) If you'd like to link to this petition from your website, you'll find tools (banner, buttons, PSAs) and links at RAIN's SaveTheStreams.org. Another petition with tens of thousands of additional signatures is available, if you prefer its design, here.

Headline: "Streaming leads consumers to purchases, Bridge Ratings says"
BY DANIEL MCSWAIN
Growing numbers of online music listeners are discovering new music and artists on the Web, and in turn, a majority of them are purchasing the music bridge ratingsthey are introduced to, according to the latest study from Bridge Ratings.

The study, focused on audiences the report calls "streamies", says that 71% of online music listeners "discovered new music that they later purchased."

The high percentage of music-buying listeners would seem to support the argument made by numerous webcasters that streaming music augments musicians' overall sales through the promotion and retail of their music online.

A majority of "streamies" also reported buying music that they were initially exposed to online, with 59% of audiences making purchases, up from 45% at the time of the last Bridge Ratings study in 2003.

Streaming usage is cutting into time spent with other media. The report also notes that, "... the more often one spends streaming video and audio on the Internet, the less time is spent with traditional media — radio specifically." [The chart below represents listeners who report consuming streaming media on a weekly and monthly basis, as well as those who reported any level of consumption.]

The study also found that 33% of online music listeners tuned into a terrestrial station's stream, an increase from 23% just one year ago.

Headline: "Chicago NPR stations re-brand for experimental online launch"
From the Chicago Sun Times: "Now that the full-time news and information format has taken hold at WBEZ-FM (91.5), it's full speed ahead on the next chicago public radiobig project for Chicago Public Radio. Late May is the current target for the transformation of WBEW-FM (89.5) in Chesterton, Ind., and WBEQ-FM (90.7) in southwest suburban Morris into a bold new radio/Internet alternative.

"The two stations, which now simulcast WBEZ full time, will target a diverse audience centered around a highly interactive Web site with a mix of news, talk and public affairs largely dictated by users...

Also from the Chicago Sun Times: "In other news at Chicago Public Radio, they've confirmed a name for the new interactive radio and online service chicago sun timesset to debut in late May on WBEW-FM (89.5) in Chesterton, Ind.

"It's going to be called Vocalo.org — a combination of the words 'vocal' (for voices) and 'zocalo' (a Spanish word meaning public square)."
