Legendary air
personality Larry Lujack returned to the Chicago airwaves
this morning for the first of four Thursday morning co-host gigs
(via ISDN line from his home in New Mexico)
on WUBT/Chicago -- and last-minute arrangements allowed former
Lujack fans around the world to listen to the show live via the
Internet.
And thanks to an alert from WUBT morning show co-host and RAIN
reader Doug James, subscrbers to RAIN's e-mail reminders
service (see form immediately below) got an early-morning "News
Flash" via e-mail allowing them to catch most of the program.
Mr. Lujack has not committed to continuing after the initial
four-show run, but the station is playing up hopes that he will
do so. ("We intend to work very hard to develop this into a
long-term relationship," WUBT EVP/GM Kathy Stinehour
has announced.) Lujack is also being used as the station voice and
for a twice-daily music feature, the "Lujack Double Flashback,"
put together by station PD Jay Beau Jones.
The last-minute webcast was
put together with the help of former major-market PD (WBMX/Chicago,
KMEL/San
Francisco, WBLS/New York City, and others) and current ISP
owner/operator and RAIN reader Lee Michaels, whose
firm, CompuOne.Net,
arranged the entire production with mere hours' notice.
CompuOne.Net
has also arranged for Microsoft to link to an archived broadcast,
which will appear in the 'premier top' position in its Media Guide
on Friday.
"We had been notified about the station wanting to do this
at about 12:30 today (Thursday)," Michaels tells RAIN.
"We not only agreed to take it on, we decided that two speeds
for the broadcast and archive were better than one. We also got
the info to Microsoft for promotion/premier feature placement --
without even being in our office. (He noted, "We'd like to
see any other company pull this off within such a short span of
time.")
Chicago
Sun-Times
columnist Richard
Roeper (who also has a local morning TV gig on a
two-hour Fox show co-hosted by former Lujack
stablemate Bob Sirott) wrote a recent column describing the
appeal of Lujack's act (and wondering if it will hold up today),
which you can read here...

"Bill
Gates is a socialist..."
|
Kurt:
You probably know this, but the RealPlayer software usually keeps
a tray icon (bottom right corner) up unless
you "deselect" it. Anything that is sitting in that tray is effectively
running and won't release unless you right click and eliminate it.
On the odd chance you didn't check for that I figured I'd let you
know. It's a good idea to lose all of the tray icons you don't really
need, as they can eat up memory really fast.
That said, RealNetworks is famous for trying to own individuals
PC's. Remember when they (oops!) "mistakenly" built in a gumshoe
that followed you around as you surfed so that they could re-sell
that info?
Bill Gates is a socialist compared to Rob Glaser!

"I
never thought I'd say this..."

Resource hog? Understatement. Plus, all their products place items
in the Win 98 start tray, constantly draining system resources.
Best advice is to immediately disable the "Start center"
(click on the Real logo at lower right -- there are two when you load
RP8, one for RealPlayer and one for RealJukebox) so you'll unload
it from the start tray and free up some resources.
I never thought I'd say this, but I much prefer the new Windows Media
Player!
