Radio and Internet Newsletter is a daily compilation of news (plus essays, commentary, and resources) designed to help you better understand the Internet and its potential impact on radio -- both the dangers it presents and the opportunities it offers. We hope you find it valuable.

Please let us know you're reading this!  We'll send you an occasional news update if the situation ever warrants. Thanks!

From Radio & Records:
"Users logged in to channels streamed over the Internet by ABC Radio Networks for 816,000 hours in October, according to the first InfoStream ratings report. With 440,000 hours, Magnitude Network was a distant second among the four servers surveyed by Arbitron. Of the 240 channels streamed by these two servers – plus BroadcastAmerica.com and LaMusica -- Magnitude’s KFAN-FM/Johnson City, TX had the largest cume, at 83,900 users..." Arbitron's analysis of the report: "This first InfoStream Report, although just a sampling of the huge online Webcast listening market, clearly indicates that small market broadcast stations are getting a big boost in audience thanks to streaming their programming on the Internet," said Joan FitzGerald, director of marketing, Arbitron Internet Information Services. "The leading Internet radio station in our first report isn't even in an Arbitron rated metro, yet its Webcast on Magnitude Networks posted a cumulative audience that exceeds that of many stations in top-rated metropolitan areas." Click here for the full Arbitron press release.

KFAN: "The Place Where The Music Matters." From the station's splashscreen: "First they said it couldn't be done, but we showed them nothing could stop the music. Now they want to copy us, but no one can duplicate that rebel sound. Kick back & prepare to journey to a whole other state of mind. Travel through cyberspace to the lush, rolling hills of Planet Texas where the sweet sounds of Texas Rebel Radio sing out. Prepare to listen to the best Texas music on the Internet! (Some say the best music period)... but...BEWARE!! One visit to the place where the music matters can be addictive. If you catch the fever the only cure is to keep THE FAN BLOWING." Click logo to visit the website of the station with the #1 cume in the InfoStream report.

Like many other stations, KFAN's website has a menu option labeled "Playlist." But when you select that option, you get a screen that says, "Playlist?....We Don't Have One!!!! - We Broke all the rules when we created Texas Rebel Radio so you aren't limited to a weekly playlist....instead our jocks can choose from over 14,000 cuts..."
Worried that your site's content isn't updated frequently enough? As of 8AM this morning, two weeks after Thanksgiving, the KFAN website still had a Java scroll on its home page saying "Happy Halloween! Check out all the spooky things going on this weekend!"

From All Access: " American Online has appointed Chris Douridas to the newly created position of VP/Music Programming for AOL's Spinner, Winamp, and Shoutcast brands. Douridas will draw on his experience as music director and host of "Morning Becomes Eclectic" for KCRW/Santa Monica..."

From Radio & Records Online: "Entercom invests in teen site: The broadcaster joins other companies such as Time Warner and America Online in investing in Bolt.com, which says it wants to promote itself on radio, cable and other media..."

From the eRadio website: "
BroadcastAMERICA.com, a leading online entertainment network, announced at the Jupiter Entertainment Forum in Beverly Hills today that it has signed an exclusive, four-year partnership agreement with United Stations Radio Networks, Inc., founded by Chairman Dick Clark and President and CEO Nick Verbitsky. Under the deal, BroadcastAMERICA.com will stream more than 30 of the network’s nationally distributed radio programs..."

From All Access: "
Matt Farber has been named President and CEO of Tonos.com, the online start-up founded last month and headed by Carole Bayer Sager, David Foster, and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds." To read more of All Access's "Net News" (registration required), click here.

What is Tonos.com? According to the home page of its website: "Tonos is the only network that allows you to interact directly with chart-topping, Grammy® winning talent. Here's an amazing chance to audition for the most successful producers in the music industry -- collaborate with top talent, record a demo and take a shot at a major record deal. But Tonos is much more than a contest. Tonos.com offers you a backstage pass to every corner of the music business..." Click the screenshot above to visit the site.
