BY KURT HANSON

Looking for a convenient way to explore the vast wonders of the world of Internet radio, any time?

That's what you can do from now on by simply remembering that you want to jump around from radio station to radio station.

The "RAIN Guide to Internet Audio" -- that grid of logos you've seen at the bottom of each day's issue of RAIN for the past few months -- is now available in an expanded form at www.RadioJump.com.

This expanded version of the "RAIN Guide to Internet Audio" is debuting today with a grid of 78 different sites, including most of the radio stations and Internet-only broadcasters that have been mentioned in RAIN during the year 2000.

More stations and other related sites will be added in upcoming days and weeks. Feel free to contribute suggestions here. (If you're recommending the streamed audio of a terrestrial broadcast station, please try to give me one distinctive thing that I can mention about either the station or the website.)

Although its intended primary audience today is RAIN readers -- i.e., industry people -- I also can see this possibly evolving into kind of a consumer version of RAIN. (About 5-10% of RAIN subscribers seem to be consumers just looking for radio stations to listen to; I believe the industry news here is too "inside baseball" for most of them.)

Your comments and suggestions are welcome. (E-mail me here.)

From NPR's website and press release: "'All Songs Considered' is based on the music played on NPR's All Things Considered . Those little music snippets you've heard between news stories are picked by the All Things Considered directors...

"Since its beta-launch earlier this year, All Songs Considered has attracted more than 50,000 users per month. The audio is enhanced by text and visual elements providing biographical details about the musicians, photos, information about the instruments and musicians' quotes. "All Songs Considered" also hyperlinks users to featured musicians' Web sites." (See illustration at left for detail on sample track.)

"'All Songs Considered' is put together by a cross-divisional team that includes NPR News staff as well as NPR Online employees. 'This program heralds the true integration of NPR programming divisions,' says Bill Davis, Senior Vice President, Programming. 'NPR's multi-media initiatives will serve existing and new audiences as we embrace new ways of making our content more relevant in their daily lives.'"

To me, this is an amusing aspect
of how public radio is different than commericial radio: This massive team of people manages to put out a six- or seven-song program once per month.
