BY PAUL MALONEY
One has to admit, hardcore fans of Elvis Presley -- twenty-three
years after his ignominious death upon the
throne -- are nothing if not loving and sincere. And one of those
fans (at least, she's a fan of Elvis tributes) has set up Elvis
Tribute Artist Radio -- an archived resource of monthly
radio shows featuring music, interviews, tour updates, and even
some original editorial material on those who would be King.
Elvis really never has left the building, has he? The social
phenomenon, cottage industry, and new-age religion that "he
of the sequined jumpsuit" has become are well documented
(read Greil Marcus' "Dead Elvis"). And if you
thought Elvis Aron's sphere of influence these days was relegated
to "The Weekly World News" and roadside velvet art stands,
don't forget about the magnifying glass that the Internet has
put upon
every fad, fashion, and conspiracy. Ladies and gentlemen, the
second set is just beginning, and the King is Internet-ready.
And this is no parody either. The artists don't sky dive
(as far as we know), and there are no mentions of "sightings,"
messages from beyond the grave, Michael Jackson, or high-fat recipes.
The site is the "two-headed lovechild" of a Canadian
woman named Joanna Johnson. Each month, Elvis tribute fans can
come to her site and listen to a stream (or download a file),
either low- or high-bandwidth, of her new hour-long show.
November's show features an interview with a hot new talent
on the Elvis tribute scene, Jesse Aron (whose father was also
an Elvis tribute artist!); folks from the Elvis Entertainers Network
(an all Elvis tribute talent agency); and a hunka-hunka music
(19 songs) from the likes of King Memphis
and the FreakAholics (who
do a pretty nice job of simulating what Elvis might sound like
if he were performing today -- with Fishbone as his backing band
and Rick Rubin as his producer).
The songs actually span a wonderful range of Elvis' music,
from the early rockabilly "Sun studios" type tracks
("Mess of Blues," "That's Alright Mama") to
the bad movie music ("Rock A Hula"), gospel songs, and
Vegas standards ("My Way"). The quality of the stream
was excellent, with a quick buffer and no stalling problems at
all (the stream is RealAudio). Navigating to any of the site's
sections is easy from the Home page. The pages load quickly, and
the photos of the Elvis himself are all classics. The photos of
some of the tribute artists might be considered classics for another
reason. Even so, Graceland itself should have been designed to
logically and tastefully.
Great fun is the "Artists" section of the site.
Not that they harp on it, but there is a conspicuous absence
of the word "impersonator" anywhere here. This gallery
of the musical talents that contribute to the show is arranged
like a scrapbook or photo album. Each turn of a page brings a
new photo and some flattering bio info of the artists that are
"Takin' Care of Business." Also of note, some of these
guys sell cds. Finally, a star beside the artist’s photo indicates
that his "Mystery Train" to fame has taken him to the
stage "in Las Vegas, Reno, Atlantic City, or any other major
casino type venue." Viva!
From Chris T. Young artist page: "COOL
& COLLECTED CHRISTY: Chris does remain cool, though sweat
may pour from his brow during his high energy performances.
Amidst an ambiance of heated frenzy, he gives his all vocally
and physically and the crowds love him for it."
Though we were precluded from taking the online Karaoke system
for a whirl (stupid office protocol -- actually, we couldn't get
a stream), it looked amusing. And who's to say that somewhere, in
front of computer right now, there isn't a young man or woman who
dares to dream, to sing! "Evah since mah baby lef' meh (ching
ching)..."
