From Crain's Cleveland
Business: "Newspaper publishing giants Knight-Ridder Inc., Pulitzer Inc. and Gannett Co. have poured $6 million into Everstream Inc., a Solon-based company that provides music for web sites.

"The money is part of an initial round of financing totaling $8.5 million, and includes $1.5 million from Everstream founder Stephen McHale and his brother, John McHale. The financing round closed Aug. 25.

"Everstream creates online 'tuners' for more than 260 newspaper web sites. Web site visitors can tune to one of 56 music channels that feature a variety of music styles, including rock ’n’ roll, country and classical, while reading the online newspapers or visiting other sites...

"The company expects to be profitable by the end of 2001."

Everstream is also the provider of the programming behind FMCities.com (see 9/8 RAIN story here).

Other investors in this round of financing -- putting in an additional $1 million -- were veteran Cleveland radio execs Tom Embrescia and Lee Zapis. Zapis is actively involved in the company and serves on the company's Board of Directors.

Also note that somewhere
in the deal is former AMFM Chairman Stephen Hicks's Capstar Partners.

RAIN Reader Cocktail Party tentatively scheduled for Friday September 22, 5-7p. I thought we'd just meet in the bar at the stylish, new W Hotel, which is very close to the Moscone Convention Center. Please let me know here if this conflicts with anything major.

From Business Wire: "James de Castro has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ultimate Inc., the worldwide marketplace for experiences. Mr. de Castro will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Ultimate Inc. business in San Francisco and New York.

"In addition to his appointment as CEO, Mr. de Castro has opted to become a major shareholder of Ultimate Inc.

"A 25-year veteran of the radio broadcast industry, Mr. de Castro most recently served as Vice-Chairman of AMFM Inc., the nation's largest radio broadcasting company. Mr. de Castro was also President and CEO of the company's radio group, its largest division, with revenues over $1.8 billion in 1999 and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AMFMi, the company's Internet subsidiary. Last month, AMFM merged with Clear Channel Inc. in a transaction valued at $23.8 billion."

UltimateBid.com auctions off
once-in-a-lifetime experiences like a golf game with major sports celebrities, front-row concert tickets with backstage passes, and walk-on parts on TV programs. (It should be a nice match for Jimmy's showmanship skills.)

Emmis Communications will unveil their Local Media Internet Venture (previewed in the 5/12 issue of RAIN here) with a formal presentation this Thursday at the NAB gathering in San Francisco by Emmis's Jeff Smulyan and Doyle Rose.

The LMIV is intended to be an industry-owned network with large scale resources to provide content, technology, and marketing to local member station websites. Particpating broadcasters are apparently to include Emmis, Bonneville, Greater Media, and Jefferson-Pilot, with a rumored $60 million behind the venture.

Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan and Radio President Doyle Rose will be among the presenters at the NAB. Look for a full report in Friday's RAIN.

From PRNewswire: "nTunes.com, the leading e-commerce solution provider for the radio industry, has named former Clear Channel Internet technology leader and radio veteran Brian Parsons as its new president. The move reflects the strong, steady success of the nTunes business model.

"The company creates and syndicates
customized CD and DVD movie stores, seamlessly integrated into radio station Web sites-turning e-listeners into e-consumers.

Radio Corporation of Singapore's 98.7 "Perfect Ten," is the Hot A/C outlet in RCS's stable. The company operates six English-language stations, three in Mandarin Chinese, two in Malay, one in Tamil, plus a three-language shortwave service -- pretty much locking up (we assume) the radio market of this city-state.

RCS has also introduced a multi-channel digital radio service called RCS Smart Radio which enables equipped users to receive CD-quality signals from a variety of AM, FM, and satellite-only stations.

Perfect Ten features a roster of cute, young DJs hosting high-energy, "party atmosphere" shows. The station appears to be very listener-driven, as the site has numerous user forms for dedications, requests, and the "Talk Show" and "Ask Dan" features ("It could be about music, health, Guiness Book of records, family or even that crush you have on that cute individual, anything!!!"). Each personality has his or her own associated page, linked from several spots throughout the site, with pictures and some personality background.

Two of the shows are of the countdown variety, with one focusing on the British music scene. There's also "Up Close & Personal," where musical guests come by the station to perform. These episodes are archived on the site in their own section.

The span of musical variety here is significantly wider than on most tightly-formatted American radio stations. Retro (and announced as such) alternative (Flock of Seagulls), rock (Creed), Top 40 (Christina Aguilera), modern rock crossover (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and even ambient on one of the specialty shows.

Unfortunately, the station doesn't seem to be up-to-speed on the promotional and "contest" elements of good radio -- at least on the site. But if Perfect Ten could it step up and give the visitor just a little bit more reason to listen (and visit the site), they'd be that much closer to "perfect."
