From Radio & Records:
"Even if there is a small pull-back from the rate of advertising next year, overall growth in radio will outpace almost every sector of the media landscape, PaineWebber’s Leland Westerfield tells R&R Online.

"He credits consolidation for making radio a stronger advertising platform. 'Consolidation has improved the health of the radio industry and has made it more competitive.'

"Westerfield notes that radio advertising in general has experienced incredible growth in recent years, and he sees no reason for it not to continue. 'We’ve never seen a period of such bounty in advertising. 2001 will be a remarkable year. [Those who predict a downturn in advertising next year] are not recognizing the quality of the vintage we are drinking."

From Radio & Records: "Steve Hicks, the...founder of Capstar Broadcasting and Vice Chairman of AMFM, will chair the board of directors for Mall.com, an online shopping and entertainment portal."

Austin-based Mall.com uses the popular "shopping mall" metaphor to help consumers find e-commerce stores of interest to them. The site allows shoppers to consolidate puchases from several merchants with one set of credit card and shipping information.

Sirius Satellite Radio
lauches first of three satellites

From Radio Business Report: Sirius Satellite Radio announced the successful launch of the first of three satellites in its upcoming 100-channel direct-to-car satellite service from Kazakhstan. “Sirius-1” lifted off 6/30 at 6:08 PM ET, successfully established a communications link at 8:33 and deployed all solar panels by 11:55PM. Sirius plans to launch the other two satellites by November... Read more in RBR.com.

Public radio shopping portal
will have 70,000 stores represented

From Radio Business Report:
"Public Radio Portal is launched (7/3). Public Broadcasting's traditional ways of fundraising have new competition. The Alliance for Public Broadcasting and Network Commerce Inc., have developed an e-commerce fundraising portal. Over 70,000 stores will make up the Listener Marketplace, where revenue will be made for local stations through shared revenues, as well as other e-commerce. The Alliance allows sponsors of non-commercial stations to benefit listeners by using discounts and incentives, and gives stations a way to tap sponsors for cash, since they are not allowed to run on-air advertisements. Read more in RBR.com.

Actually, the verb tenses are wrong in the news item above -- they merely announced that they are developing the site and that they plan to launch it in July. Read the actual press release here.

It will be intersting to see if they can make a 70,000-store site easily navigatable. And if they can keep it consistent with public radio's image

"When I think of all
the arguments Maria and I have had, I realize how silly most of them were. And it makes me wonder why she wanted to argue over such stupid things. I think I'll go ask her."
