Interest in Internet radios appears to be on the increase

From CNET News:
"The interest in Linux-based Internet radios is picking up. At the same time 3Com acquired Kerbango for $81 million, another company, Penguin Radio, received an equity investment from Internet Partnership Group, said Penguin Radio chief executive Andrew Leyden.

"Penguin Radio is building a device that will receive digital radio broadcasts over the Internet, then pipe the signal to a home stereo system.

"The company also is working on a portal site called PhoneRadio.com to provide links to Internet radio for people with cell phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants) and other portable gadgets.

"In addition, the company is working on an Internet car radio that will receive signals from the Ellipso satellite Internet service.

"Leyden declined to say how much Internet Partnership Group invested. 'It is enough to get us through the year and then some and allow us a massive buildout of staff...'

"Penguin Radio hopes to have its radio design finished by late summer or early fall, Leyden said, [and] the price of the radio should be between $200 and $250."

I would take this one with a big grain of salt, for reasons I will be happy to go into at some future date. Meanwhile, I'd welcome your observations using the form below or via e-mail here.

"RAIN: Radio And Interent Newsletter"
-- the leading web-based publication devoted specifically to the subject of Internet radio -- is establishing a summer internship program and is now accepting applications.

If you or someone you know is looking for an interesting new opportunity in the exciting dotcom world, this may be just what you're looking for.

This summer, we plan to both make significant improvements in RAIN and possibly add one or two sister publications and/or websites. (See RadioJump for one possible example.)

Candidates with interest and/or experience relating to one or more of the following project areas are encouraged to apply:

Journalism
Help research and write RAIN -- and the premiere issues of our new publications. Write critiques of radio station websites. Interview newsmakers. Write book reviews.

Graphic design
Work on a variety of projects, including the following:
Grab and edit screenshots and logos from existing websites for editorial purposes. Create a photo library of key players in the industry. Help design the look of the websites for our new ventures.

HTML/Java programming
Serve as webmaster to help us add new functionality to the RAIN website, including bulletin boards, chat rooms, auditorium, search function, auto-responders, rollover effects, other Java applets, and more.

Marketing / Finance
Help us improve the caliber of RAIN's marketing to the Internet radio industry. (Reasonable marketing budget available for on-line and off-line marketing, including contests.) Help develop and implement marketing plans for new publications.

Be part of a young, exciting,
fast-growing Internet company!

RAIN's office is located in Chicago's vibrant Lakeview neighborhood -- although for candidates who live elsewhere, we're cutting-edge enough that we're willing to explore telecommuting options. (There's no reason we can't both get webcams to communicate with one another if you're working from Houston or Anchorage or Honolulu or Singapore.)

Again, feel free to recommend this opportunity to high-quality potential candidates as we strive to make RAIN a better publication for you.
